“I found out that I needed an operation for a back problem which was causing severe pain to my left leg from the sciatic nerve. After speaking to my GP and realizing I was getting nowhere I decided to take the matter into my own hands as I could hardly walk. After speaking to private consultants and realizing that without private medical insurance I was not going to be seen to in this country without shelling out around £20,000 I decided to look elsewhere. I decided to look into having the operation privately in India and was fortunate to come across Mediescapes India. From my initial enquiry when I e-mailed my MRI results to Mediescapes India I was amazed ..more.”

Back Pain and its treatment options in India

Back problems are one of the most common reasons to see a doctor. Approximately 80% of people will experience back pain during their lifetime. Fortunately, for the vast majority of these people the pain will subside naturally without the need for surgery.

However, for those with chronic conditions surgery may be an option.

This web page sets out to inform you about:

  • The nature of your spinal disorder, (stenosis, slipped disc, disc protrusion, disc inflammation)
  • The available minimal invasive spinal surgery techniques of treating your back pain or neck pain and their radiating symptoms and their indications, outcomes, complications. (See specific pages).
  • The conventional methods of treating your back pain or neck pain and their radiating symptoms (Microdiscectomy, Decompression, Fusion, Total Disc replacement and their indications, outcomes, complications). (See specific pages in this informative website).
  • FAQ's frequently asked questions

Spine surgery—whether back or neck surgery—is an advanced treatment option for pain and disability caused by an identifiable lesion in the patient’s anatomy that has not adequately improved with non-surgical treatments. Although spinal arthritis tends to be chronic, the symptoms are rarely progressive and rarely require surgery on the painful spinal joints. However, surgery may be needed in severe cases, and may include a spine fusion, decompression and/or laminectomy.

Many patients with lower back pain wonder if they will need surgery and if and when they should consult a surgeon. This website reviews a number of symptoms and considerations regarding when it may be advisable to consult with a spine surgeon.

Spine surgeons are physicians who receive special training in the diagnosis and treatment of the spine which include problems with the neck (cervical spine), mid back (thoracic spine) and low back (lumbar spine). We are proud to say that India has produced some of the best world renowned Spinal Surgeons and our associated Senior Spinal Surgeons working for their respective JCI Accredited Hospital are always eager to extend a supporting helpful hand to  your spinal problems...

The latest techniques like Minimally invasive spine surgery, Expandable devices for Lumbar Spine Fusion are routinely carried out with results at par with the best centers globally.

Conventional Spine surgery involves taking long incisions, forceful muscle retraction for prolonged time, removal of normal tissues like ligaments and bone to approach area of pathology. Most of the times these surgeries are done under prolonged general anesthesia.

This long incisions and injury to normal structures results in

  • Increased blood loss
  • Increased scar tissue formation
  • Increased chance of neural injury
  • Epidural scarring
  • Denervation of paraspinal muscles

All these cause increased morbidity and failed surgery syndrome. Since many times patients require to stay in bed for long duration of time, and there is also loss of work, earning , patients tend to avoid surgery and prefer to suffer pain and disability. Now there is hope for all these suffering population, in the form of minimal invasive spine surgery.

Minimal Invasive spine surgery involves

  • use of very small incisions,
  • minimal muscle retraction,
  • less normal tissue damage
  • targeted treatment of pathology.

  • Many surgeries are done under local anesthesia, hence surgeries can be done even in patients with high risk of anesthesia.
  • There is less blood loss.
  • minimal morbidity.
  • Patient can be mobilized very early and he can be back to work faster.
  • It prevents complications associated with prolonged bed rest.

Since normal tissues are not removed or damaged, post operative pain is less and also there is less chance of failed back syndrome.

Our team of expert Neurologists and Neurosurgeons are supported by the most extensive Neuro-diagnostic and imaging facilities including Asia's most advanced MRI and CT technology. Spine Surgery Made Safer, Simpler, Surer

Inside the Spine
The disc is made of a gelatinous central portion called the nucleus puposis and an outer ring of ligaments called the Annulus Fibrosus, which seals the nucleus. The annulus has overlapping radial tire, and this allows stresses to be distributed without rupture. The disc thus functions as a hydraulic cylinder. Any tear in the annulus leads to failure of this hydraulic cylinder leading to disc dysfunction.

Factors leading to Disc Prolapse
Several factors can lead to annular tears and disc prolapse. This includes smoking, increased coughing, sitting n a stooped posture, driving, lifting heavy weights, etc. Tear in the annulus also leads to leakage from the nuclear material which is toxic to the nerves. The resulting inflammatory response causes a neural irritation with radiating pain in the legs (sciatica). This could be accompanied with numbness and loss of reflex. Surgical intervention may be required to relieve the leg pain.

Classical vs Modern
The classical approach in the yesteryears consisted of a procedure called laminectomy. It involved removal of the entire lamina of the spine for approach to the disc. The resulting surgical scar was long and patients were restricted for 2-3 months. Modern lumbar discectomy termed “micro discectomy” utilizes the operating microscope to allow better visualization of the nerve structures. This means it is minimally invasive – minimizes muscle, ligament and bone disruption and allows faster healing. Patients who undergo a micro discectomy can be discharged with minimal soreness and complete relief from leg pain after an overnight admission and observation.

Endoscopic techniques allow the same surgery to be performed through an incision of less than 1 cm in size further minimizing disruption of normal structures.

Advantages of Endoscopic Discectomy

+ Avoidance of general anaesthetic
+ Smaller scar
+ Less post-operative pin
+ Shorter hospital stay
+ Quicker return to work and normal activity
